Liatris

The stiff, bottle-brush flowers have a long shelf life and handsome foliage. They're also known as blazing stars or gayfeathers due to their shape. Liatris are used as food sources for many butterflies and moths, and are an easy-to-grow invitation for monarchs and the like!

Most Popular Colors: Purple, white.

Blooming Season: Mid- to late summer.

Soil Preferences: Well-drained, moderately fertile, sandy soil is best.

Climate Preferences:Liatris is winter-hardy, and will thrive in any temperate climate.

Sun Exposure: Partial shade to full sun.

Landscaping Tips: These tall-growing flowers can add texture and color to the background of any flower bed. Because liatris plants tend to reseed themselves, they can be used to gradually fill in a large area.

Planting: Most liatris plants are sold as corms. Plant them 8 inches apart, and 2 inches deep.

Care:

• Water regularly if your plants receive less than one inch of rain per week, but do not overwater.
• Liatris prefer drier soil, so allow the soil to dry out between watering.
• Deadhead liatris plants to encourage a second blooming. If you wish to allow the plants to reseed themselves, do not deadhead after blooming has finished for the year.
• You may wish to divide your liatris every two to three years.
